# Award certificates for a course

> Design a certificate, turn it on for a course, and manage the certificates your learners earn: open, withdraw, restore and resend by email.

A course certificate is a shareable proof of completion that learners earn when they finish your course. You design it once in **Manage**, turn it on for the courses you choose, and manage every certificate from the course report. For what learners see, read [Take a course as a learner](https://docs.ahaslides.com/features-and-functions/take-a-course-as-a-learner.md#get-your-certificate).

## Certificates at a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| Find it | **Manage** > **Certificates**, then **Course settings** > **General** in the course editor |
| Starting point | The **Standard** certificate, in one of 6 themes |
| Issued when | A learner finishes the course and meets its completion requirements |
| Manage issued certificates | **Certificate** column in the course report |
| Learner options | View, download as PDF, copy the link, add to LinkedIn |

## Design a certificate

**1. Open Certificates**

Open **Manage** and click **Certificates**. The list shows each certificate's name, how many courses use it and when it was last updated.

**2. Start a new certificate**

Click **New certificate**. The editor starts from the **Standard** certificate, with a live **Preview** that updates as you change a setting.

**3. Pick a theme**

Under **Theme**, choose one of **Standard**, **Classic**, **Heritage**, **Modern**, **Botanical** or **Midnight**.

**4. Choose the details to show**

Under **Details on the certificate**, turn each detail on or off:

| Detail | What it adds |
| - | - |
| **Show logo** | Your logo. Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP image up to 2 MB. |
| **Show organisation name** | The name of your organisation |
| **Show signature** | A signature image, plus **Name under signature** and **Job title under signature** |
| **Show course duration** | The estimated time the course takes |
| **Show score** | The learner's score from their first attempt at each scored lesson, when they have one |

You can also change the **Heading text** and the **Text above learner name**.

**5. Name and save it**

Enter a **Certificate name** and save. You can then choose the certificate for any of your courses.

The **Standard** certificate can't be changed. If you edit it, saving creates a new certificate instead. To change a certificate later, click it in the list.

## Turn on a certificate for a course

**1. Open Course settings**

In the course editor, open **Course settings** from the course header and stay on the **General** tab.

**2. Choose a certificate**

Under **Certificate**, choose **Standard certificate** or one of your own certificates. Click **Preview** to see an example with your course page logo, colours and fonts.

**3. Save**

Click **Save**. Learners who complete the course can now get the certificate.

You can also assign courses from the certificate editor. Under **Courses using this certificate**, search for and select the courses. A course you remove from the list goes back to having no certificate. To design a new certificate without leaving a course, click **Create new certificate** next to the **Certificate** setting, which opens the editor in a new tab.

Turning a certificate on also gives one to learners who finished the course before you did. To stop issuing certificates, choose **No certificate**. Certificates learners already earned stay valid.

If you set a minimum correct-answer rate or minimum learning time as a [completion requirement](https://docs.ahaslides.com/features-and-functions/create-and-publish-a-course.md#set-completion-requirements-and-a-thumbnail), learners earn the certificate only when they meet it.

## Manage issued certificates

When a certificate is on for a course, the **Learners** tab of the [course report](https://docs.ahaslides.com/features-and-functions/read-your-course-report.md#certificates-in-the-report) has a **Certificate** column. It shows **Valid** or **Withdrawn** for each learner, and whether the certificate email was sent. Click the **⋮** menu on a row to:

| Action | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Open certificate** | Opens the learner's certificate in a new tab |
| **Withdraw** | Withdraws the certificate. You can add a **Reason** that only you can see. |
| **Restore** | Makes a withdrawn certificate valid again |
| **Resend email** | Sends the certificate email to the learner again |

Only the course owner can withdraw or restore a certificate and resend the email. **Resend email** isn't offered for a learner with no email address.

When you withdraw a certificate, its link shows **No longer valid** and the certificate can no longer be viewed or downloaded. Restoring it brings the link back.

## Frequently asked questions

> **Do certificates work for courses I export to my LMS?**
>
> No. Certificates are issued for learners who take the course on AhaSlides. A learner who completes an exported package is recorded in your LMS.

> **Can I change a certificate after learners have earned it?**
>
> Yes. Each learner's certificate is built from the certificate you chose when they open it, so a change to the design shows on certificates already earned.

> **Does a learner need an account to check a certificate?**
>
> No. Anyone with the certificate link can open it to check that it is real.
